Topless: 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible

InsideLine Video produced a nice piece about the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible that we wanted to share.

Drop the Top

And the top is the story of this car. Less than 30 seconds is all it takes to transform what is basically a G37 hardtop (no B-pillar or fixed side glass) into a wide-mouth convertible. Just push the button on the center console and hold. All the work is done by a team of electric motors that hum while they work, peeling back the car’s roof from the windshield header, splitting it into three evenly sized pieces and stacking it clamshell-style in the car’s trunk.

It’s a true marvel of engineering, with countless hinges, double-hinges and pulleys, but unlike Lexus, which does its retractable hardtop for the SC 430 in house, Nissan has had its system engineered in Germany by Karmann. It uses steel roof panels and is installed on a sub-assembly line at Nissan’s plant in Tochigi, Japan, the same facility that produces the G37 coupe and sedan.

But there’s more to the G’s transformation from coupe to convertible than just the roof and its complex mechanism. Infiniti reinforced the car’s A-pillar, door sills and overall body structure. Oh, and dual pop-up anti-rollover bars deploy if the machine’s big brain thinks it’s heading for the upside-down. According to Larry Dominique, Nissan North America’s vice president of product planning, the active roll bars were an aesthetic choice: “They kept us from having to put in an ugly hoop brace.”

Up Close with the 2011 Infiniti QX56

LeftLaneNews.com talks to John Weiner, Director of Product  Planning for Infiniti, about the 2011 Infiniti QX56.
The Infiniti QX56 is getting a lot of attention at the New York Auto Show this year and is making a strong debut.

The 2011 Infiniti QX56 is now being built on the same platform as the Nissan Patrol which is a deviation from the Nissan Armada platform it was previously built on. This new platform has given it a new look and feel that makes it stand out from the competition.

Just the other day I had a friend post on Facebook that they can’t figure out how to post replies to their friends on Facebook and they keep posting on their own wall instead of their friends.  If you think of all of  the technology that exists now a days with cell phones, iPods (now iPads as well), WiFi and other devices it’s sometimes challenging to understand how it all works.   We don’t have all the answers but we want to try and point you in the right direction or maybe give you that one pointer or trick that enables you to get the most out of your Infiniti vehicle.

These are our first videos and we plan for them to get more sophisticated over time.

Bluetooth Phone and Bluetooth Audio Setup

One of the nicest things about the new Infiniti models is that most (check with your salesman for specific packages) come with some nice tech features such as Bluetooth “phone” and Bluetooth “audio”.

What’s the difference between “Bluetooth “Phone” and Bluetooth “Audio”? The difference is that with Bluetooth “Audio” you can listen to your Bluetooth enabled MP3 player (like an iPhone) wirelessly through your vehicles audio system.

I thought it was cool when I first got my Jeep Commander that it had an “AUX” jack for me to plug a cable into my iPod so I could listen through my car audio.  This Bluetooth “Audio” integration is sure cool though.

I took a few minutes to try the pairing out for myself.  Check out the videos for “How to Pair Your Bluetooth Phone” and “How to Pair Your Bluetooth Audio”.

Please keep in mind our production costs are very low and Steven Spielberg wasn’t available.  But we do hope that these “How To” Videos help you with getting the most out of your Infiniti’s Technical Features.

Video Review of 2011 Infiniti QX56

The 2011 Infiniti QX56 made it’s debut at the New York Auto Show this week and the reviews are starting to pour in.  Cars.com, who always does great video review, took a look at the QX56 and did a review while at the show.

On a side note… there are good videos and bad videos that get posted to YouTube with car reviews and misc videos. This is one of the good ones as it’s not just a slide show with some bad music in the background.  Take a look and see if you agree.

Men vs Women Drivers

Last night on NBC5 in DFW you might have watched the segment on NBC5 News at 10pm that took a look at driving habits of men and women and specifically married couples.  Meredith Land, the anchor of the

NBC5 10pm slot, came out and interviewed me and my wife, Adrian, and put us through a little driving challenge. We had a driving instructor with us in the passenger seat who gave us instructions on what to do.

First up was parallel parking and I thought that’s where Adrian would beat me.  Admittedly I am terrible at parallel parking.  However, I won that contest. It only took me two tries to get into the spot and my wife three tries.  Also, she creamed the curb while I don’t think I came close.  Anyway, I do think she is better at parking so I was surprised about those results.

Reality TV – It’s All About Editing
After the parking contest we took a drive around the block, with the instructor in the passenger seat, and he directed us on where to turn.  Here is where it gets interesting.  At the stop sign that I supposedly “rolled through” or “ran” I slowed down and since I couldn’t see the traffic in both directions and I stopped a few feet past the white line next to the stop sign.  So yes, I did pass the stop sign without stopping.  But I did stop  just a few feet past the sign where I could see the traffic from my right and left.  I guess the correct thing to do would have been to stop at where the white line / stop sign was and then slowly move out (or stop again) after looking both ways for other cars.  I have heard that called a “California stop” or “California Roll”. Well, I was born in California.

The rest of the test I will say I did go a little too fast on the corners and turned into the middle lane (twice).  But that’s the way guys drive, right?

I found the statistics used in the segment were true to me and my wife’s driving history.  I have had more speeding tickets and one expensive crash while moving and she has had a number of inexpensive fender benders, dent and dings from slow speed (single car) type accidents.  Like the time she backed into my car coming out of our own driveway.

So yes, I lost the battle in this particular instance, but the war of who is a better driver – Men or Women will continue on.
